About Yellow Mountain:
Since 1976, Yellow Mountain Enterprises has served adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities living in Avery County. We are an Adult Day Vocational Program and operate under the umbrella of Avery Association for Exceptional Citizens. AAEC is a 501 (C) (3) nonprofit organization located in Newland, North Carolina. All donations are fully tax deductible. 100% of all monies received go toward operating expenses. We also operate and provide residential services at the Avery County Group Home for six adults in a personalized home-like atmosphere with 24-hour a day supervision.
Education:
Our clients spend part of each day in the classroom taking compensatory education classes. We work in close partnership with Mayland Community College to offer classes in our building. We also provide one-on-one educational activities in math, reading, computer skills, and specialty areas as needed.
Independent Living Skills:
We provide supervision and support for individuals living independently. With the help of a grant from the NC Department of Transportation, we provide transportation from home to work and back again. Many of our clients wish to learn skills to become more independent, so we also provide opportunities to develop these skills in a variety of areas. Some examples include personal grooming and hygiene, social interactions, healthy habits, cooking, household chores, and personal finances.
Work Opportunities:
All clients who attend Yellow Mountain Enterprises are gainfully employed for part of the day. We provide a variety of choices for their workday. Several clients also work outside the program through the help of supported employment and job coaching.
